Tagore comes to Ontario schools
The year 2011 marks the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel Laureate poet of India. Tagore advocated educational principles that are “holistic” in its nature and approach. He believed, the development of the “whole” child could only be achieved by living respectfully and in close contact with nature which is so relevant in today’s time. Tagore propagated universal education and brought the West and East together in his school in Santiniketan, India.
To commemorate this special year, we have put together a two week long educational package for Kindergarten to Grade 8 students. The goal is not only to enrich and enlighten the young minds with Tagore’s invaluable literature and art but also to open a new horizon in their lives. This resource material is in keeping with the basic principle of Tagore’s educational philosophy of the natural development of the “whole child” and the love for nature. It is a multi-disciplinary curriculum material which is also in accordance with the expectations of the Ontario Curriculum. It is felt, this package could be used in the month of May in conjunction with Asian Heritage month. As a culminating event schools working on Tagore will be invited to present their work at the Ananda Mela (Tagore’s Fair) event on June 13, 2011. Schools will be also invited to visit the Fair as a field trip.
We are delighted to report that our curriculum has been endorsed by the Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT). Click here to see the letter from Martin Long, Preseident, ETT.
